Beyond Reaching Out

Reaching out to our innermost self was not just a reaching out to more of ourselves, to more detailed understanding of our inner complexities. No, it was indeed a reaching to a center where a new encounter could take place, where we could reach beyond ourselves to him who speaks in our solitude. Reaching out to strangers was not just a reaching out to the long row of people who are so obviously needy - in need of food, clothing, and of many forms of care - but also a reaching out to the promises they are bringing with them as gifts to their host. All that has been said about solitude and hospitality points to someone higher than our thoughts can reach, someone deeper than our hearts can feel and wider than our arms can embrace, someone under whose wings we can find refuge (Psalm 91) and in whose love we can rest, someone we call our God.

“You who live in the shelter of the Most High, who abide in the shadow of the Almighty, will say to the Lord, “My refuge and my fortress; my God, in whom I trust.” For he will deliver you from the snare of the hunter and from the deadly pestilence; he will cover you with his pinions, and under his wings you will find refuge; his faithfulness is a shield and defense.”

- Psalm 91: 1 - 4

Reflection Question: What most helps you to rest in God?
