“…God’s grace has been revealed, and it has made salvation possible for the whole human race and taught us that what we have to do is to give up everything that does not lead to God, and all our worldly ambitions; we must be self-restrained and live good and religious lives here in the present world, while we are waiting in hope for the blessing which will come with the Appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior Christ Jesus (Titus 2:11-13)”.

  1. Paul:

“give up everything that does not lead to God”

I like this translation of these verses and particularly this part of verse 12. In nine words, the apostle has given us the simple answer to so many of life’s anxieties, frustrations and wrong turns. I only pray that I can act on this wisdom!

I am striving to live free of an addiction that has enslaved me for much of my adult life. Every time I am tempted to relapse I will hold onto these words: “give up everything that does not lead to God.”

  2. Susan Vining:

“God’s grace has been revealed…” to me although I shut Him out to shut off pain. Yet He has never abandoned me and blessed me many times over. I think my earlier attitude reflects a person trapped through cicumstance and human limitation in loneliness, without faith. His grace continues to release me from this state, though life is often a difficult struggle. I believe that I am given the grace to seek to “put my mind in my heart”- to be changed, if I pray and ask Him to help me. A prayer of my heart whispers “I believe… help my unbelief” as I pray for and give thanks for the “vulnerabilty to grace.”

  3. Miriam:

“what we have to do is to give up everything that does not lead to God”

To me this is what I have to direct all my focus in life towards……..and ensure that I rejoice, pray without ceasing and give thanks in everything………

I remember going to this prayer meeting where 2 very prayerful pastors were invited for the evening. The evening of prayer had this air of gloom and lacked that joyful spark. Bearing our crosses shouldn’t stop us from smiling at each other as we make our pilgrim journeys.
