Join Us On A Lenten Journey, starting February 17th
Brynn Phillips Lawrence is pleased to join the Henri Nouwen Society online community as a moderator in the Lenten discussion of In the Name of Jesus. Graduating with a degree in International Development from the University of Guelph, Ontario, Brynn spent three years teaching at a small Christian International School in South Korea. In this international community she filled the role of teacher, department supervisor, and mentor for her students. Upon returning to Canada in 2007 she joined the Romero House community of refugees, located in the west end of Toronto. Life in this beautiful community, founded by Mary Jo Leddy, involved being a companion to, and learning from, refugee claimants who have fled to Canada from all over the world. It was also an important time of learning what it means to live in community and be a good neighbour. Most recently she has taken on the role of Project Coordinator for the Nouwen Archive Letter Project, sponsored by the Henri Nouwen Legacy Trust and the Henri J.M. Nouwen Archives and Research Collection at the University of St. Michael’s College in Toronto. She is in this role because she believes that one letter Henri Nouwen wrote to an individual could make all the difference in the heart of another.

Good Morning everyone from Rapid City South Dakota, where the weather is cold, but our hearts are warmed by faith and love. I work with individuals with special needs, and found a kinship with Henri Nouwen a long time ago. I thank you the chance to share in our faith and growth and looking forward to our discussions
February 17th, 2010 @ 9:20 pm
I am glad to join in this conversation of faith around Henri’s reflections. I was blessed by hearing from others in a previous book discussion here and this feels like a special invitation to walk the Lenten journey this year. I live in California.

Lovely to hear from each of you, welcome!
Thank you for the introductions you all gave already. Come on up to the next post. Feel free to share more about yourselves!

Hello all …
I live in Bogor Indonesia. I read Nouwen’s book on 2004, my first book was Return of the Prodigal Son. It’s really a great book, and changed my mind at that time. I read some of Nouwen’s book after that. All in Indonesian edition. I found this site, and want to join the discussion. I have In the Name of Jesus in Indonesian edition : “Dalam nama Yesus”. I work for special need children, so Nouwen’s book really give a deep reflection for me, eventhough sometimes it’s really hard to understand. I’m so sorry for my English, but I will read all of our discussion.

Hello all…
I currently live in Kansas City. I am intrigued and consumed with the concept of 1st and 2nd love in Nouwen’s book. I am in full-time organized ministry while desiring a deeper intimacy with a God who was very human while being very divine. Thanks for the opportunity to interact.

Hello Brynn,
I am from St. Julie Billiart Parish in Dartmouth Massachusetts where our pastor had invited the parish staff to read “In the Name of Jesus” and particpate in this conversation.
Thank you for facilitating our conversations.

I wanted to check in and wish all of you a very rewarding Lent. I’m opting out of the discussion this time, (simply because another book can not enter this house and the library doesn’t have it). I will be in the shadows reading from time to time. I’m still discerning my Lenten reading and there are so many of Henri’s books and others here worth revisiting.
God be with all of you — Rose

Looking forward to the discussion. Appreciated your suggestion of reading the whole book through once and then re-reading the chapters as they come up for discussion. Looks like it will be a quick read but the amount of thinking and digesting of the material will require much reflection and pondering. Thank you for making this Henri Nouwen book study available to so many of us everywhere all over the world!!!!
February 14th, 2010 @ 7:02 pm
Looking forward to the discussion. Never done this before. But have read the book a couple of years ago. Yes a great book.

Henri Nouwen’s books have been a part of my spiritual life for over two decades. Tonight was my first visit to this web site and it is a blessing to see this Lenten book discussion starting. I have read In the Name of Jesus several times and have given it as a gift to several Christian leaders that I have tremendous respect for.
I look forward to the discussion and to learning from each of the participants.

Monika,
Please don’t be shy about your English! We won’t worry so much about your English grammar… we will try to understand what you want to say. I hope you’ll share your thoughts with us, as well as reading all that we write.

I’d like to participate in this discussion group — In The Name of Jesus totally transformed my concept of what it means to be a leader, and this wonderful little book came into my life at a time when I really needed to be reminded of its simple, but powerful message.
February 9th, 2010 @ 10:03 am
Welcome Hope and Teresa!
I’ve posted the reading schedule. You can find it at the very top of the main blog page, in the right corner. I’ll remind you of the schedule as we get closer to starting.

Bonnie,
The book provides very practical insights into how each of us can live a life of Christian leadership. It applies to everyone who is wanting their life to be an effective witness for Christ… regardless of position, role etc.. I have no doubt you will be enriched by the book and our discussion around it.
I will post a schedule this evening, which will indicate the topics we will cover each week. That might help you get a sense of this upcoming journey.
I hope you’ll join us.
Brynn

Wow,
So wonderful to hear from all of you. I can sense the energy for our upcoming discussion!
Please don’t worry if you have never participated in an online book discussion before. We will make it our own experience. Hopefully it will be somewhat “new” even for those who have participated many times before.

The book club discussion sounds very interesting to me. I have just discovered your web site and have been looking for a way to enrich my Lenten journey.
I would be better able to make a decision on whether this book would help my Lenten journey if I could find excerpts from it on line. Can you help me with this? Thanks, Bonnie
February 7th, 2010 @ 10:10 am
I have the book and think being a part of this lenten discussion would be stimulating and valuable - so count me in!

February 5th, 2010 @ 4:24 pm
Great to hear from you Judy, Becky and Katy.
I will post a schedule early next week, which will indicate which section of the book you should read in time for each week’s discussion.
That being said, it is a great idea to read the book in full before hand, and re-read it section by section when we go through it.
Have a good weekend!
February 5th, 2010 @ 12:31 pm
Should we have the book read by the 17th or will we start it together? I’d love to join in. Just finished Return of the Prodigal Son. wow. anticipating reading and gaining from In the Name of Jesus

In the Name of Jesus is indeed a rich book; simple yet profound insights fill the pages. I am sure we will also learn a great deal from each other. May this discussion truly be in the name of Jesus. Can’t wait to begin!

Welcome Aboard Brynn.
I am ready and willing to get back into these groups. I have the book and will re-read it before we start so it is fresh in my mind - and then again as we go along. I hope to be able to keep up.
In the Name of Jesus is a wonderfully rich book. I am looking forward to it. May we all grow with the guidance of the Holy Spirit and Brynn.
