Next discussion scheduled for Advent

Starts November 28, 2010: REACHING OUT

Feb. 19 - Starting Can You Drink the Cup

Filed under: Can You Drink the Cup? — February 19, 2007 @ 7:41 am

Hello everyone! Lent begins Wednesday, and so it’s a great time to put in a little extra time on the spiritual side. We try to make it as easy as possible to participate in these online reading groups. All you need to do is click on the “Comments” link below these posts and express yourself! I think you’ll see in a few weeks that we have built a virtual community. It’s satisfying, not to mention amazing. The schedule for this book is posted at the very top of the brown column to the right, under the “Can You Drink” schedule. I encourage you to start participating in the discussion NOW by scrolling down to the note just below this one and telling us just a little bit about yourself. I will post the actual first question related to the book in the next couple of days, so come back then, and often! And welcome! If you ever want to ask me something privately, feel very free to write me at edwoj54@gmail.com.

  1. Patty :):

Welcome to you all! I too, am a wife, mom of 5 adults, 3 grandchildren, retired primary teacher and special needs tutor. I am now a full-time caregiver for my 10 month old grandson along with my hubby. I have read many books by Henri Nouwen. My first book was: “A Cry for Mercy.” back in about ‘80 or ‘81. I spend most of my time in a wheelchair with a progressive condition, so I echo this prayer I found in today’s monthly meditation on-line from the Nouwen Society. “Lord, today it is my turn to experience sickness, aging, pain, dying or change.” Paula D’Arcy for Lent I am working on being less possessive of my hubby and accepting that people do not feel comfortable visiting disabled people in their homes. I am still learning other ways of coping.

  2. Joan:

Hello. My name is Joan and I live in Jacksonville, Florida. I am a fan of Henri’s writing. I look forward to reading and reflecting on this work. I am a middle aged single mom of three children who are almost grown up. I earn a living (but barely) as a state employee for a social services agency. I have been involved as a Catholic lay minister in several different ministries for 12 years.

  3. Becky:

hi. my name is becky. i am a believer in Jesus Christ, a lover of people and books and am looking forward to these conversations. i serve as a social worker at a large missionary church in indiana. i have been a lover of nouwen’s work for many years with “can you drink the cup?” as one of my favorites. expectantly,
    becky

  4. Martha Saatjian:

Hello, I am from Santa Barbara, CA. The first Nouwen book I read was “Clowing in Rome.” Since then I’ve read at least fifteen of his books, most of them more than once. I find that something new challenges me each time I reread a favorite.

I am a wife, mother, grandmother and retired special education teacher. I’m looking forward to sharing with you during this Lenten season.

  5. Elaine:

I found this website unexpectedly tonight, serendipity.

I was once quite interested in Nouwen, many years ago. I am not familiar, however, with the assigned reading. I live in a small town and not sure if I can find a copy of the book in time to join in your discussion. However, I will try.

In the meantime, it seems right to have found you tonight, or perhaps a Higher Author(ity) found me.

    God’s peace to you all.

  6. Joe James:

My name is Joe James. I am from Jonesboro, AR where I still live. I am a children’s minister at the Southwest Church of Christ. I am currently working on my MDiv.

I fell in love with Nouwen’s writings this past year, when I read my first Nouwen book “Life of the Beloved” I have since then, never moved on to another one of his books. I have spent the last 4 months or so, just letting that one soak in.

Anyhow, “Can You Drink the Cup” will be my second Nouwen book. But our staff is about to read “The Way of the Heart” also! I am excited about this reading group!
