Getting started - share a little about yourself
Just to get started, would you mind telling us a little about yourself? I have found that it’s fun to know where people live — and just about anything else you want to say. Just click on the “Comments” link below this note and type away! Even if you have been involved in our other groups, remember that we will have people for the first time, and others joining us all the time! Over the next four to six weeks, we will build a virtual community. At the same time, I want to say that we respect your privacy, and you don’t have to write anything here to participate in this online reading group. You can participate by reading along. Do whatever you’re comfortable with. I’m getting it started by saying a little more about myself. Read below - click on “Comments.”

This is my first online discussion group. Thank you for providing the opportunity.
My husband and I live south of Seattle. We have five adult children, eleven grandchildren, and one 17 year old sweet dog.
I am recovering from something the healthcare providers have decided was a stroke, this past March 20th.
Henri Nouwen has provided guidance for me through his books. The encouragement to follow the Spirit of God, and His instruction is throughout His work. Somehow the permission and acceptance of human longing for God and all we do in that expression I have better come to know through Henri’s life of faithful writing.
In 1987 I received something I now know was a call to pray for Romania. In 1991 we heard of a young child and visited him. For ten years we attempted to adopt him. A wise and faithful friend told me the child was God’s call to me to an institution where he lives. So two or three times a year a hospital in Beclean, Romania has become my home. Many abandoned developmentally disabled, physically disabled, and some people with mental illness have found a home in this place since 1946,
Although my friends seldom to never receive invitations they welcome and invite others into their home. They are my joy, and have allowed me to be their family. I could not have selected a more perfect gift. Rather than allowing us to bring one child to our home He has given us a home with many children.
Truly the faithfulness of God is beyond measure.
I am waiting to read each insight from each person.

As yet I do not have the book but hope to be able to purchase it soon.
It is a privilege to be able to share in your thoughts etc and will prove a great encouragement for me.
I live in the UK with my husband of 39 years. God’s greatest gift to me.
” In the shadow of Your wings I rejoice,
Your right hand holds me fast”
May this be granted to all of us.

Hello from Pittsburgh, PA. I am taking my time getting to work (I am a substitute teacher) since we’re on a two hour delay due to some snow. What a nice discovery: this blog on this website. I’ve been reading Henri Nouwen and am excited to share with others whom have been similarly inspired by him.
March 2nd, 2007 @ 11:09 am
Hello,
I am looking forward to reading and discussing Nouwens’ books. I read a few books of his a number of years ago, and loved them.
I am a single Mom of a 9 year old. I live in the US, but am Canadian by birth. I love animals, the outdoors, and I love to read.
Thanks for having these forums!

Welcome to you all! I too, am a wife, mom of 5 adults, 3 grandchildren, retired primary teacher and special needs tutor. I am now a full-time caregiver for my 10 month old grandson along with my hubby. I have read many books by Henri Nouwen. My first book was: “A Cry for Mercy.” back in about ‘80 or ‘81. I spend most of my time in a wheelchair with a progressive condition, so I echo this prayer I found in today’s monthly meditation on-line from the Nouwen Society. “Lord, today it is my turn to experience sickness, aging, pain, dying or change.” Paula D’Arcy for Lent I am working on being less possessive of my hubby and accepting that people do not feel comfortable visiting disabled people in their homes. I am still learning other ways of coping.

Hello,
I am 36 years old and live in Geneva, NY. Geneva is located in the beautiful countryside of the Finger Lakes Region in Upstate NY. My wife and I are about to start our twelfth year of marriage, and we have two boys ages 7 and 5.
I first read some of Henri Nouwen’s reflections in a small book that my wife brought into our home. A few years ago I read “Return of the Prodigal Son” and was very moved and inspired by his words. The spirit of his writings resonates very strongly within me. A few years ago we moved and left a parish that had a very active reading group. We have not found that same connection yet here in Geneva, so, I was very excited to find this online reading group.
I am looking forward to sharing this experience with you all.
Peace to you.

Great to hear from all of you. I have relatives in the Louisville area and enjoy visiting there. It’s heartening to read that many people are just discovering Henri’s works. He has left us quite a legacy with his writings. If you don’t like the first question, don’t give up! I’ll be adding another question every few days for the next five weeks, and I’m sure some will strike you, while others will strike others. Please help make this an online discussion by reflecting on one another’s points.

Hello from London, Ontario, I’m a member of the local L’Arche community.
This is my second attempt at this reading group, attempt in that I often find it hard to articulate my thoughts but very much enjoy reading others.
Henri’s book Can You Drink the Cup? is in one dimension small but in a spiritual dimension very large. I look forward to everyone’s comments.
Thanks Ed for taking this on.
Peace
Garry

Hello from the Bluegrass State, Kentucky. My wife and I are pastors/counselors/teachers/chaplains/spiritual directors. In other words, God won’t let us keep one job! I look forward to this discussion. I discovered Nouwen in seminary and his writings often took priority over the required reading of classes.
February 20th, 2007 @ 9:47 pm
This is the first reading group I’ve joined and am excited to hear what others have learned from Henri Nouwen’s works. I live in Louisville, Kentucky and homeschool my 3 daughters. We spend our days outdoors and talking about every subject under the sun. My daughter’s questions have led me to re-examine my own beliefs and Henri’s books have helped so much in the journey.

Hello Everyone
I am located north of Toronto in Canada. I am new to Nouwen - (was just introduced in the past month or so) and even newer to online reading groups! I have two married daughters, five grandchildren and I share my life with a very silly chocolate Labrador named Snickers. I am looking forward to the journey with you.

I am a retired United Methodist Minister living at Traceway Manor Retirement Community in Tupelo, MS. Father Nouwen has long been a strong help in my spiritual journey. In 1993 I attended a retreat at Kanuga that he led. Following his presentation on the Return of the Prodigal Son, he gave me a large copy of the poster which had been displayed at the session. I anxiously looking forward to participating in this online discussion. I am legally blind and may have problems reading and posting comments but I will give it a try. The VA has given me a computer with software that will read to me, but I do not always know how to respond. My friends call me E.S.

Hi there! I live in Haliburton, Ontario, Canada with 3 of my 4 children and my granddaughter. This will be my second time in this online group when we read “Here and Now”. Although I thoroughly enjoyed reading everyone’s comments, I did not participate much. I will also be reading the daily Lent meditations in his book “Show Me the Way” that I have reread over and over again each Lent for the past 10 years - each year I learn something new from the readings!
Ed, good to be back at it, eh?!

Goodmorning from Cayley, Alberta, Canada - Hurray! We are finally going to start another reading group. This is my second - and would like to say that reading the book, trying to answer the question honestly, and then each person’s comments made, Here and Now - so much more than a good read.
We are retired, living in a small town. In the summer we garden and golf. I quilt, mostly for cancer patients, through Victoria’s Quilts. Thank you for all your comments. Peace to you all.

I’ve been reading along on this board for a short time, and have owned “Can You Drink the Cup” for years without reading it, so I’m very excited to be reading it and joining in here. I live in New Jersey with my husband of 25 years; our 2 children are in college. A former teacher, I’m currently working on my first book and also spend time with several volunteer organizations. Glad to be here! Peace.

Hi,
I live in Mission B.C. Canada, not very far from Vancouver. Since i discover Nouwen’s writings oh, about 3years ago, I have been one of his great fans.
I talk about him in Ireland, to people who are interested in spirituality and I have all his books in my personal library. Also to try and make a little cohesion from all the areas he wrote on, I have 15 books written about him. I like everything he wrote, I am so much in favour that I think I can make people afraid of getting involved.
We just began a reading group of ten people four weeks ago. We are discussing the Return of the Prodigal Son and I enjoy the discussions very much, it shows me that other people are not all enamoured to him.
I read Can You Drink the Cup? and I am looking forward to the comments of others on the book.

Hello everyone, my name is Connie. The Lord has blessed me with a home in San Diego, Calif. I have read Henri Nouwen books for many years and have grown so very much in knowing who I am and whom I serve, a mighty God! I am looking forward to our discussions about this book…I am a musician and work in our local parish by providing music for the Sunday masses, funerals, etc.

Hello Everyone,
My name is Al Spangler and I live with my wife Elaine in Pine Beach, New Jersey. This is my first on-line Nouwen discussion group. I am very excited to be with you. About a year ago, I started a Nouwen reading group that is still meeting weekly in a local diner. The reading and discussions were life changing for me and called me in a new direction. I’ve since moved on. I miss the meet-ups, so for me the timing of this is perfect. I expect wonderful things from our discussions together.
Blessings!

Hello, My name is Maureen. I live in a Philadelphia suburb. I work as an academic counselor in a program for disadvantaged high school students. The first Henri Nouwen book I read was in 1998, “Sabbatical Journey.” I discovered Henri when I took a leave from my job in ‘98 and accompanied my husband on a job assignment he had in Holland. I’ve been ‘hooked on Henri’ since that first reading. I now own many, many Nouwen books, and I’ve told a lot of people about Henri - the man and Henri - the writer. I don’t believe it was a fortuitous moment when I found Henri while living in Amsterdam - it was meant to be. I am very much looking forward to discussing this amazing spiritual writer during this season of Lent.

This is my first online reading group experience. I really look forward to it. I live in Slaton, Texas, a rural community in Northwest Texas. I discovered Henri Nouwen several years ago. His writings never cease to touch me deeply. I am a daily reader of the online meditations. I am 65 years old, married, an attorney in private practice. Under the guidance of my spiritual director for 2-3 years, I’ve found I am not too old to learn who I am in the Beloved and just how enormous is God’s grace! I hope we enjoy our journey together.

Hello all! My name is Kevin. I am 41 years old and I live in Tuttle, Oklahoma.
I just discovered this group a few minutes ago and I’m thrilled to get involved. I hope I can find the book in the book store today. I’m a huge fan of Henri Nouwen. I just completed my first book and I’m beginning research for a second book I plan on working on the rest of this year.
I was in the ministry working with youth for about 15 years. I have been out of ministry since 2002 and divorced from my wife of 15 years since then. We have 2 children, also 11 years apart. Our oldest is 18, our daughter is in Radiology Tech School in Stillwater, Oklahoma and Our Son, is 7 and in first Grade in Tuttle. He lives part of the time with each of us.
I am recently remarried and feel God has renewed my call to ministry. I don’t know yet what His plans are, but my plans are to follow Him and continue writting as He gives me the words.
It was through one of Henri’s books that God inspired my first book this past December. Henri’s “The Inner Voice of Love: A Journey Through Anguish to Freedom” renewed my spirit and brought me out of my own depression and back on track with my ministry and pursuit of God’s call for my life. Through Henri’s Spiritual Imperatives, God exploded in me like never before. I cannot quit reading His Word writing as God never has moved like this in me. It is difficult to explain.
I am excited to join this group and seek what God has to share through this book and your input.

I am a stay-at-home mother of two young children. We live in Tupelo, MS. I did however, grow up in Illinois and will never forget my Junior High field trip to Abe’s hometown and burial place in Springfield. I enjoy the works by Henri Nouwen and was invited to join this group by a good friend. I am looking forward to the next several weeks.

Hi! I live in Tupelo, Mississippi, best known for the birth place of Elvis Presley. We don’t see him much anymore, he was spotted last somewhere in Michigan. I am gald to be back, and it was great to know that Jack kept our group together by sahring comments after the last online discussion we had, “Now and Then.”
I want to apologize ahead of time for my grammer–mis-spelling words, putting in comas everywhere, and sometimes just not making sense at all. As Henri said “I feel very blessed to have you as companions.”
Cheers and Shalom,
Phillip

Good morning Ed and all:
I am so happy to be participating once again in this discussion with such a Spirit-filled community. Today is a great day to get started–I am home today with my 12 year old daughter as we both have the day off for Presidents Day. And it is my older daughter’s 23rd birthday. Yes..I do have 11 years between my 2 children, proving that God does indeed have a sense of humor! My husband and I are officially on the ‘other side of the hill’– we are both 52 years old and will be married 28 years this September. We live in a small town in Northern New Jersey–almost at the New York State border–with our 12 year old daughter Cassandra, our 2 cats, 2 rabbits and a very lively and lovable lab mix named Wesley. Our older daughter Jillian is a 5th year student at Arizona State University. I am a 7th grade life/environmental science teacher at the middle school right here in town.
Thank you Ed for moderating once again. I’m looking forward to getting started!
February 19th, 2007 @ 7:34 am
This is one of my favorites of Henri’s and I am looking forward to this study during Lent. The act of lifting up, allowing to be filled (i.e. trusting)and drinking the cup are what it is all about.
February 19th, 2007 @ 7:26 am
Good morning! I live in Springfield, IL, best known as the hometown and burial place of Abraham Lincoln — appropriate on this Presidents Day holiday in the States. I’m a university administrator here and have been on the Henri Nouwen Society Board for nine years. I never met Henri, but I did correspond with him for 10 years. Can You Drink the Cup? is a good book for me at this time because I know I need to nourish that spiritual dry spot inside of me.
