Next discussion scheduled for Advent

Starts November 28, 2010: REACHING OUT

Here and Now — getting started

Hello everyone! I am honored to moderate this online reading group on Henri’s book Here and Now. I live in Springfield, IL, USA. I have moderated two other Henri Nouwen Society groups online in the past couple of years, and as an adjunct faculty member, I teach writing online at the University of Illinois at Springfield. So I like this way of communicating and building community. To start participating in the discussion and/or reading what others have to say, scroll down to the note just below this one. All of the online “discussion” takes place on the “Comments” links under each item or question. This week, we’ll be dealing with Chapter 1 of Here and Now. This group will continue for seven weeks. For the complete schedule, click on “Here and Now schedule” on the right hand side of this page. I will post the first discussion question by Wednesday morning, so come back then, and often! But please see the note below this one. And welcome!

I am a hospital chaplain in Kentucky, very interested in Nouwen and all aspects of spiritual development. I am a lay person, theologically trained, Catholic, but consider myself an open-minded “seeker” looking at the wide range of pathways to God. Looking forward to the comments and insights gleaned from this online group. -ed (huffe56@hotmail.com)

I have some difficulty with today’s passage lifted out of context. It seems to me that success also comes from the opposite of respectability - isn’t that one major problem with our present age?
Community is also born of love and friendship and caring - three keystones of faith, ( not always the tangible fruitfulness the world wants to see ).

In regards to Henri’s reflection on the Second Death of Dec 17, I personally believe in what was prevalent in the medieval times. It is indeed eternal suffering & torments as revealed by Jesus Himself in Luke Ch.16. Hell was not meant to be created for human beings at the beginning but was for Satan & his followers. If men refuse to accept God’s salvation and choose to remain in sin will be doomed to hell which is the lake of fire for eternal suffering (Revelation 20:10). God is Holy, no one in sin can come near to God. It is the love of God that He Himself became flesh as Jesus Christ to come & die for sinners (i.e. everyone on earth) so that we can be saved. (John 3:16- 18).

Hi folks, I’m also looking forward to this discussion group. I’m still waiting for my book to arrive…I ordered it from Amazon and it is enroute. I’m a 52 year old college professor and I’ve recently discovered Henri Nouwen’s writing. I’m very excited about having the opportunity to read his works and share with my “new friends”! Frank

Hello! I’m so pleased to be able to participate in this reading group, and only hope my poor computer skills won’t confuse me too much.
I am 65 yrs., married to a great man, George. We live in a small village, have a large and beautiful garden - began golfing again after a 15 yr break and am so thankful for these days God has given us.
I have read Here & Now, and look forward to re-reading it and sharing thoughts and ideas from this great gift Henri Nouwen has given us. My daughter, was on a yoga retreat in the mountains and said while she was there she read this great book that fit in so well with her retreat. Yes, it was Here & Now.
It seems all Henri’s books touch me personally - as if he were my own spiritual director, or that I am writing my own thoughts. Thank you for this opportunity………….lk
