Henri Nouwen: Writings Selected With An Introduction By Robert A. Jonas

Henri Nouwen: Writings Selected With An Introduction By Robert A. Jonas(Orbis Books, 1998, p.lxx.+121)

While the greater part of this slim paperback is taken up with a carefully chosen selection of quotes taken from Nouwen's already published books and articles, it is important to point out the special benefit for new readers of the close-up of the spiritual master offered by one who knew him well as intimate friend and confidante.

Jonas, himself a psychotherapist, spiritual director, retreat leader and director of The Empty Bell contemplative center in Watertown Massachusetts, had ample opportunity to come to know Nouwen at deeper levels not open to casual acquaintances. In his seventy-page introduction, Jonas treats his readers to a probing, frank, informative yet sensitive, personal portrait of Nouwen not found in previous publications.

A clue to his balanced and benign approach can be gleaned from the summary statement with which he concludes his introduction:

"He showed us all that the very things we often flee - our vulnerability and mortality - can, at any moment, become the place of holy transfiguration, for us and for our world."

No serious student of Henri Nouwen will want to neglect this insider account.
