Eternal Seasons: A Liturgical Journey With Henri J. M. Nouwen

Eternal Seasons: A Liturgical Journey With Henri J. M. NouwenMichael Ford, Editor (Sorin Books, Notre Dame, Indiana, p192, Darton, Longman & Todd, London, U.K., 2003)

Conveniently formatted to coincide with the Liturgical Cycle, Ford sifts from Nouwen’s literary output a carefully crafted selection of readings to serve the reader through each of the seasons of the Liturgical Year. Ford likens Nouwen’s literary style to one of Nouwen’s favorite artists: Vincent Van Gogh. Van Gogh painted landscapes with bold strokes of flaming gold. Nouwen did basically the same with words. As Ford sums up in his Introduction: "Both men wanted their work to touch people." It is this down-to-earth approach, the appeal to lived human experience that shines forth in the works of both. And it is recognition of this quality that comes through in Ford’s selections from the Nouwen collection to enhance and deepen our celebration of the Liturgical Year.
